POINT OF INTEREST, MUSIC, PERFORMANCE, TECHNOLOGY

So I’ve been gettin more and more back into music over the past couple of years (and I’m sure this might confuse some of you) but I’ve been trying to marry my art and music making processes, and I think I’ve finally begun to get onto a decent middle ground. Here are some more steps that I am taking in that direction:

Creating “fake” bands via documentation (screenprints, t-shirts, demo tapes, bootleg live video, etc.)

Buying a modular synthesizer in 120 dollar increments from synthesizers.com (affordability and flexibility rule) so does this pic

baby clutched by the sound art hand of doom

I’ve also been pretty into freeware and “consumer” approaches to music, Here are some cool programs that I’ve come across

intua’s beatmaker for the iphone/ipod touch

this one is my personal favorite, and I’ve been using it a lot cuz its fun and easy to use

its kind of modelled after an akai mpc, there are velocity/touch sensitive pads, an onboard sequencer that makes it super easy to program
beats in time, real time record and the update I got a couple of weeks has a slew of other cool shtuff

its 20 bux but worth it (so not so freeware)

then theres a series of freeware by halcyon that’s pretty easy to use but fun and good for a laugh

check out their easy to use arpeggiator

or the drumatix modelled after the famous roland tr 808 drum machine that all those rappers love so much

there’s also gleetchlab which I haven’t used in a while, but it was built in max/msp/jitter and is a pretty easy to use sample player/editor, it doesn’t have sequencing capabilities, but its pretty fun to make noises on

until next time kiddies, peace love and a happy new year’d

I am a huge fan of exploring contradictory genres, and when people do this. Especially when it’s real and not some sort of a gimmick (although it could be argued that many Japanese cultural phenoms come out of that sort of thing). Either way, this is great.

Meet Jero, who is being described by the press as the “first black enka singer in history.”

[Enka is a] genre of Japanese popular songs (kayōkyoku) developed in the postwar Showa period (1926-1989) , which has been likened to American country music and Portuguese Fado in terms of themes and audience. The term now usually refers to the latter type of traditional and melodramatic popular songs. -wikipedia

POINT OF INTEREST, BIKES

Courtesy of one of my favorite blogs, Copenhagen Cycle Chic, an explanation of how I usually feel about bike culture.

I’m pretty sick of bike snobbery, and I agree that it would be more easily incorporated into American culture if it wasn’t such a ~thing~

what do y’all think?

Found this posted in another blog and thought I’d pass it along– Food and Money, a photoset on Flickr. This is the work of Peter Menzel and it’s from a book called Hungry Planet: What the World Eats. I’m on the lookout for the book to see the rest of these really thought-provoking images.

freedom through limertation

1. setting limmits on ourselfs frees us from nature - socioty - imposing their limits upon us

2. many of our tecknollagies, rather than helping us, hinder us. this is becouse teqcknollagy incorages us to avoid our limitations rather than meet them, which is our pathway to god

3. our tecknollegys are often created out of fear and our need to feel entertained rather than actual need. they also fool us into beliving we are safe and invincable, therby increeceing ego atachment and missery.

4. the bicycle is an invention of genious, the car a mere inevitability and ultametly a monstrosity

5. The telivision and internal combustion engin have ruined life

6. climbing mount everest with an oxgen tank makes climbing mount everest easyer but actually devalues mountiains, the climber and the achevment

7. the reason for setting out on a journy is not to arrive magicaly at the goal, but to not know if we are going to make it to the finish. bravery is being willing to engage with our limitations

8. we lose trust in ourselfs and god by rigging the vote

if there was ever a reason to make video art…

DUNKIN DONUTS is doing a contest, in which coffee lovers all over america are invited to submit their work to what is essentially a juried video show online in which the winner receives (instead of a grant and an award named after some person) a years supply of coffee!

here, watch the video

Seriously guys, anybody who makes video should submit to this…

Google Images
POINT OF INTEREST, ART, TECHNOLOGY

this image came from google images. it was astounding how many images came up that were images that people put on their images so when people link to them, the “bandwidth theif” image would come up instead

So, probably by some sort of software that is similar to that which allows me to see if any blogs have mentioned/linked this one some how, I was left a comment on one of my posts featuring an image found on google images about the inappropriateness of Hot Linking. For those of you who don’t know your netiquette, hotlinking is, as defined by wikipedia, “the use of a linked object, often an image, from one site into a web page belonging to a second site“.

Hotlinking does kind of suck, as it drains bandwidth from somebody’s website without them even knowing, and unfairly. But the thing is, in my case, the image came from a google image search, which these days has been accepted by many, including contemporary artists such as Wolfgang Plöger (check out “I did not know anybody was there” on the Konrad Fisch Galerie website.

I know the issue of hotlinking is not quite the same as copyright issues or any of that, but it seems to me that many people find it acceptable to cut and paste links to images directly since the internet has become such a fluid tool for us, and nobody thinks too much about the issues when the internet first started out such as safety and netiquette.

I’m not too sure how I feel, because I think the internet has lost a certain amount of privacy and in its nature challenges a lot of ownership issues, especially when websites such as Youtube encourage linking directly from their website and Google Images takes images out of the context of a website and just provides you with their address. I think I will try to upload images from now on, as I have the space and like to not be a “net jerk” or whatever. You are also welcome to upload your post images to the site. but…

What do you guys think?
