Bye Maryanne.
ART, DEATH, SOUND

I just read on the ARTSJOURNAL weblog that Maryanne Amacher had passed away on October 22nd.

Either I have been too busy with my own work or slacking off at reading too many art news websites but I was blown away to find this out.

I am almost disappointed in myself for not finding out sooner.

Maryanne Amacher has been one of the greatest influences in my work, my thoughts on sound and on life. While reading the post I was nearly in tears.

I don’t really know what else to say aside from I wish I the opportunity to experience her work.

…if you’re home on the internet now, you’re probably not (those of you in boston) attending this colloquium on performativity at the museum, which looks like it’s going to be killer.

one of the speakers is the last remaining member of canadian power group General Idea, a very early (high school) influence of yours truly.

Solidarity vs. Solitarity
ARCHITECTURE, DEATH, FUCK!, GLOBAL, IDENTITY, SPACE, VOID

Walking home tonight I realized something important. One must have solidarity with one’s solitarity in order to effectively manage, well, everything. I know I made that word up, but that’s also important (making up words) for creating a new culture that we can all agree upon in order to annihilate in 50 years time. I suppose that doesn’t really make sense.

Here is one take on aloneness. With a good graph, in addition.

The Solitary Artist. Noble in their cause. Alone in their suffering. Starving in their kitchen.

TehchingHsieh  Tehching Hsieh

Beuys  Joseph Beuys

Abramovic  Marina Abramovic

Rosler   Martha Rosler

Why do we suffer alone? Because it is worse to suffer together.

Let us flourish in both solitarity and solidarity.

Together, we can make great things alone.

(Un)like Burningman.

burningman eerily similar to: palmsdubai

I still can’t make up my mind if burning man or dubai are mind blowing or not. Perhaps it’s because my mind is blown?

ps. click the photos for better ones.

Let us also consider entering the void as opposed to filling the void.

Entering is allowing the void to embrace you, filling is attempting to negate the void. Can we enter the void together and not attempt to fill it? How many of us will fit in the void before it is full? Is the void within or without?

Q: How many artists can you put in the void before it is full?

A: 21 minutes.

Experience the layers of aloneness. Startlingly similar to the layers of the burning man and palm.aloneness

continuing on this TRAGICtory
DEATH, DRAWING, EVERYTHING ELSE, FUCK!, POINT OF INTEREST

TRAGEDY!

“The psychology of the orgiastic as an overflowing feeling of life and strength, where even pain still has the effect of a stimulus, gave me the key to the concept of tragic feeling, which had been misunderstood both by Aristotle and even more by modern pessimists. Tragedy is so far from being a proof of the pessimism (in Schopenhauer’s sense) of the Greeks that it may, on the contrary, be considered a decisive rebuttal and counterexample. Saying Yes to life even in its strangest and most painful episodes, the will to life rejoicing in its own inexhaustible vitality even as it witnesses the destruction of its greatest heroes — that is what I called Dionysian, that is what I guessed to be the bridge to the psychology of the tragic poet. Not in order to be liberated from terror and pity, not in order to purge oneself of a dangerous affect by its vehement discharge — which is how Aristotle understood tragedy — but in order to celebrate oneself the eternal joy of becoming, beyond all terror and pity — that tragic joy included even joy in destruction”
-Nietzsche in The Birth of Tragedy

This morning Taylor and I were discussing the role of Gwen Stefani in 90s music consumerism.

Gwen Stefani was probably one of my biggest influences in my childhood, although in hindsight her fate has become slightly tragic:
